Idea/Suggestion: Gem overwrite perks?

I was reading through the thread on contests and gem swapping earlier, and someone mentioned that lower PR players would be "overwriting their gems anyway". Now, usually this wouldn't mean anything to me conceptually, but the way it was phrased put the image of stacking gems behind the current gem equipped in my mind.

Now, at the top, if you have a good gem equipped and find a better one, you would typically unslot the prior one to replace it with the better one. But what if instead of a raw destruction of a prior equipped gem, you got bonuses to stats on the one you replaced it with, and have the buff stack the more times it occurred. You could balance the effect out with the caveat that you could only do it x amount of times, or only to gems that were lower tier than your last one.

If we assume that the buff would be say, a small bonus to the PR of the replacing gem's equivalent stats, then you could replace a PD/CH/CD Gem with a PD/CH/CD Uncommon Gem and then with a PD/CH/CD Rare Gem and so on and so forth for an exponential or linear buff to its stats as you progress levels.

Of course the stats, specifics, boosts, and implementation are all purely hypothetical. If anyone has suggestions, comments, feedback, or other ideas inspired by the concept, I'd love to hear it. I just find the idea of more planning and customization to get to higher PR tiers interesting, and this feels like a cool way to do it.
